How to Check If Your Resume Passes ATS (Before You Apply)

You can't access a company's ATS directly to test your resume before applying. But you can simulate how it will be parsed and scored — and fix any issues before they cost you an opportunity.

Why you can't test against the real ATS

Companies use different ATS platforms — Workday, Greenhouse, Taleo, Lever, iCIMS, and dozens of others. Each has slightly different parsing logic and threshold settings. What you can do is simulate the process using a tool that extracts and analyzes your resume the same way these systems do.

What to look for in an ATS check

A useful check covers four things: (1) Can the tool extract your resume text cleanly? If it can't, neither can the ATS. (2) How many required keywords from the job description appear in your resume? (3) Does the tool flag format issues — tables, columns, image-based content? (4) Are your sections (Experience, Education, Skills) detected correctly?

How to run the check with Screend

Upload your resume to Screend, paste the job description you're applying for, and review your ATS score and keyword gap analysis. Fix the flagged issues, then re-upload and recheck. The entire process takes two to three minutes.

What to do with the results

If your keyword match score is below 70%, tailor the resume more specifically to this role — the action plan shows you exactly what to add and where. If you have format issues (image-based PDF, tables detected), fix those first. No amount of keyword optimization helps if the ATS can't read your file.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Submitting and hoping for the best instead of testing first
  • Testing your generic resume instead of the tailored version you're actually submitting
  • Focusing on keyword presence without checking format parsability
  • Skipping the job description during the check — keyword match requires a specific JD to be meaningful
